We spoke with our Cape Town based friend and PRESENT contributor Lars Moereels about his journey, new habits, and the process behind his latest Logo Sofa project for LACUNA Studios April 12, 2022
How are you doing, Lars? Has the pandemic been good to you in the last months in any way?
My man! I’m in my perfect cocktail mode at the moment, you know, when all the ingredients are measured well... I’ve been 50/50 in South Africa and Belgium since a while. The pandemic restrictions in Belgium were horrible, it made me lose touch with a lot of good friends. I’m so happy to be able to live in Cape Town for the time being. I have had the pleasure to meet many like-minded people and some cool locals who inspire me in new ways. In 2022 I have a goal: working on a project together with you :)
Thanks to the modular system, this single piece of furniture can take on many different shapes and, accordingly, points to the idea of combining multiple Logo Sofa's together
Please tell us more about LACUNA! Where does the name and the symbol come from?
1.  An unfilled space; a gap. “the journal filled a lacuna in Middle Eastern studies”
2.  Anatomy: a cavity or depression in a bone

For me it’s the missing link, the moment right before you understand something fully. The symbol represents the moment right before you get it.

Side note: When I was a kid I used to always hunt for rare words. I googled every week to find new words to make posters with, just to train my “graphics skills” and in one of the posters I used the word Lacuna and it just stuck with me!

What was the idea and process of creating the Logo Sofa? How do you actually build this? Can you tell us more about the actual process? Where do you start when producing an object like this?
I think after my studies in photography I’ve always directed projects in the realms of music, imagery etc. And then I started collaborating on objects with my visions. People asked me to make limited editions or merchandise for them. After all these experiences, I just had the feeling that I wanted to create my own product. I literally had a dream about a sofa from the logo. I called my friend Orson and asked him to turn it into a prototype draft. A few days later he showed me the shape and it immediately hit the sweet spot for me! This is the first time in my life I followed up on a dream and pushed it so hard that It becomes a (sellable) object.

I also have question for you, Hugo: How did you come up with the idea to make products that live in the PRESENT world? Like the Shidō spray or the Rézine scent holders, how do you see this evolving? And where do you like this to end up being?
The main motivation is to discover different industries through our collabs with makers around the world. Making Shidō allowed us to explore Ryoko Hori’s atelier and her process of creating a new scent. This gives us the opportunity to share with our community the product-making-journeys in the print magazine. With being transparent in this way we aim to encourage others to dare to take the leap as well … nothing is impossible!

How does a typical day in your life look like? Have you made any new habits in 2022?
7h30    Wake up
8h30    Swim in the sea + walk
9h30    Coffee + Juice
10h30  Read news + Whatsapp + overlook personal projects
12h       Work on my projects
19h       Cook
20h      Eat

End it with a good movie, a nice walk or call with a friend. I’ve been going to bed fairly early since I’m in South Africa. I wake up with the sun and go to bed with it and by midnight I’m sleeping.

Resolutions: more workouts, more flow in my work, more meditation. I’ve somehow lost this habit and I miss it. I love listening to Tara Brach who helped me revision my inner thoughts a lot.
How do you keep a clear head and stay focused on the important things in your life when it gets crazy?
My partner Tanya helps me to stay present with me and us as a couple. She’s a beautiful reflector, I’d like to thank her for being there for me!

I love a morning swim in the freezing South African sea here. I also stay present by cooking one of my favourite meals or trying to discover a new one. I love to get lost in nature when I’m tense… and I like to fall back to some me-time too.
Thank you, Lars!
